Three Main Parts of a Dental Implant Restoration

Dental Implant Restoration St. George, UT

A implant restoration is a popular way to restore a tooth that is in bad shape. Additionally, the process can be used to replace missing teeth or teeth that are nearly deteriorated. The dental implant restoration process can be lengthy, but more often than not, the wait is worth it for those seeking better oral health. The process takes a bit of time because there are three parts to it. Ready to learn more about each part?

Dental implant restorations

Outlined below is each part of a dental implant restoration. Most people are under the impression that dental implants completely restore or replace teeth. However, there are actually three parts! Keep reading to learn more.

1. The fixture or dental implant

The fixture is the actual dental implant, which is used to restore or replace the tooth's roots. Dental implant restorations rely heavily on the actual fixture because it is the structure for the entire process. Fixtures are typically made of titanium, which is a durable and biodegradable material that the body rarely rejects. The fixtures are shaped like screws and they are placed directly into the jawbone during a dental implant placement procedure.

2. The abutment

The next part of the dental implant restoration is the abutment, which is a small oral piece that sits right above the gums. Abutments are nearly impossible to see once the process is complete, however, they are very necessary in order for the entire dental implant restoration to work.

The abutment plays the role of attaching the dental implant to the prosthesis or artificial tooth. Abutments are small circular pieces that are typically made of metal. Placement of this piece cannot be done until the fixture has fused with the jawbone naturally, a process that takes a few months.

3. The prosthesis or artificial tooth

Lastly, the dentist will place the prosthesis, which is also known as the artificial tooth. The prosthesis is the final part of the dental implant restorations. It allows the patient to smile naturally, chew normally and sometimes even speak comfortably.

When a single dental implant restoration is done, the general dentist will usually recommend a dental crown. Dental crowns are great artificial teeth and they can provide long-lasting durability and strength. Modern-day dentistry has allowed for the evolution of tooth-colored crowns, which allows for a discreet restoration. When an entire arch of dental implant restorations is done, the dentist may recommend dentures. Dentures can replace an entire arch of teeth, which is a nice alternative for someone who does not want an entire row of dental crowns.
