Clear Aligners to Correct Malocclusion

If your teeth are not straight and you are considering having treatment, clear aligners are one option. With clear aligners, you have a convenient and discreet treatment, making it popular for many. All you have to do is to wear the aligners at least 22 hours each day. That will cause your teeth to slowly move to the right position. Keep reading to find out more about them.

About clear aligners

Not only do clear aligners fix crooked teeth, but they can also correct a bad bite. A bad bite is also known as a malocclusion. Having a malocclusion can cause many dental issues depending on the severity. To prevent dental issues in the future, dentists often recommend getting treatment early.

Crossbites

A crossbite happens when the bottom and the upper jaws do not meet right. That might be because of a lateral misalignment of the lower and upper jaws. Usually, a patient’s upper front teeth will be inside of the lower front teeth. A crossbite is vital to treat because of all the issues it can cause for patients.

For instance, a crossbite can cause bone loss, gum recession, or chipping teeth. The goal of the treatment is to shift both the jaws and the teeth to a new location. That way, the teeth will meet when the patient bites down. A patient usually has the option to have clear aligners.

Open bites

This kind of issue happens when the bottom and the upper jaws do not meet. There will be a gap between the bottom and the upper teeth. This makes it harder to chew and bite. It is sometimes caused by a tongue thrust. The good news is that clear aligners can close the bite and bring back proper chewing functions.

Overbites and underbites

Having a deep bite, or an overbite, means that the upper teeth overlap the bottom teeth too much. It is defined as the teeth overlapping by at least 25%. Some people have a slight overbite, which is a class one malocclusion. But some people have a bite that is more than 25%, which is a class two malocclusion.

It is also known as a retrognathism. This will need corrective treatment sooner rather than later. That will prevent the teeth from wearing down prematurely. If left untreated, the patient may end up having jaw pain.

On the other hand, an underbite is the opposite of an overbite. The lower front teeth overlap the upper ones. The jaw is too far forward usually. It makes it harder to chew and eat.
